Kalimantan is the Indonesian portion of Borneo — the world's third-largest island and one of its most ecologically significant. Ancient lowland rainforests threaded by dark, tannin-stained rivers shelter an extraordinary array of wildlife found nowhere else on Earth: Bornean orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, and the elusive clouded leopard among them.
The iconic way to experience Kalimantan is by klotok — a traditional wooden houseboat drifting along the Sekonyer River through Tanjung Puting National Park, waking at dawn to the calls of gibbons and watching orangutans feed at Camp Leakey, the world's longest-running orangutan research station. Inland, Dayak communities maintain longhouse traditions, elaborate tattooing customs, and wood-carving practices stretching back thousands of years.
